Health and Safety Policy
At Summit North Construction, we are committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, subcontractors, clients, and visitors. We recognize that protecting the health and safety of our workers is both a legal obligation and a core company value.
We are dedicated to complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) of Ontario and the Regulation for Construction Projects (O. Reg. 213/91). Our objective is to eliminate workplace hazards and reduce the risk of injury, illness, or incidents across all job sites.
Summit North Construction complies with all applicable Ontario legislation including, but not limited to:
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
Regulation for Construction Projects (O. Reg. 213/91)
Designated Substances Regulation (O. Reg. 490/09)
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015)
Workplace Violence and Harassment Requirements under OHSA
Our commitment to Health and Safety
We will:
Provide and maintain safe workplaces, tools, and equipment.
Conduct regular risk assessments and site inspections.
Ensure all employees are trained in mandatory Ontario safety programs such as:
Worker Health and Safety Awareness
Supervisor Health and Safety Awareness
Working at Heights (WAH)
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
Comply with all Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) reporting and notification requirements (e.g., Notice of Project).
Investigate all incidents promptly and take corrective action.
Maintain a separate Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy.
Appoint a Health and Safety Representative or establish a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) where required by law.
Ensure legal compliance under OHSA and applicable regulations.
Provide training, supervision, and information to protect worker health and safety.
Appoint competent supervisors as defined under OHSA.
Submit all necessary documentation to the MLITSD, including Form 1000 (NOP) where required.
Supervisors
Ensure workers comply with OHSA and company policies.
Identify hazards and take appropriate action to address them.
Conduct daily safety talks (toolbox talks) and site inspections.
Workers and Subcontractors
Work safely and in compliance with training and procedures.
Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Report hazards, unsafe conditions, or injuries immediately.
Participate in training and safety meetings.
Joint Health and Safety Committee & Health and Safety Representative
In accordance with OHSA:
A Health and Safety Representative will be appointed on sites with 5–19 workers.
A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) will be established on sites with 20 or more workers.
Representatives will receive appropriate certification and training.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency procedures will be posted on each site.
All workers will be trained in site-specific emergency response, including first aid, fire evacuation, and incident reporting.
Communication and Continuous Improvement
Safety performance will be monitored through regular audits and inspections.
Open communication is encouraged—workers are urged to report concerns without fear of reprisal.
This policy will be reviewed annually, and updated as needed, to reflect changes in operations or legislation.
Policy Review and Sign off
This policy is posted in all workplaces and on our company website. It is reviewed at least once a year, and whenever there is a significant change to our operations or legislation. Our employees and subcontractors will receive a safety orientation and booklet. Upon completion of orientation, staff and subcontractors will review and sign off on the policy.
